Why Current? I teach because I've transformed. (Pt 1/2)

W H Y C U R R E N T ?

(Pt 1/2)

Because I've transformed.

Some of the fondest memories of my life are with Contact dancers in residencies, the relationships built when we are co-living together for longer periods of time.

I teach, because of these experiences.

Recess - Saltspring - Leviathan - Arambol - KPN.

We need this here in Bali.

What we are doing in Ubud is not co-living. It's a brush of a 'hello, how are you? Traffic sucks, doesn't it."

It's a tourist explosion in the last 5 months, with expats re-adjusting to accommodate and find their flow / home / connection in the re-opening of Bali.

It's busy-city energy. We all take breaks often to "escape to nature" as needed, to re-balance. And we should. Cyclical life must be honored.

Residencies & Retreats offer time to unwind, release, build up new patterns of being, connection, and then inspiration can flow through.

This is what I've learned as a dancer / artist.

It's a process.

Bali. The honest truth.

We are over-abundant in jams, and devoid in trainings by dance professionals.

I've written a post a while ago on Facebook about the scene here "Dear ecstatic-contact dancers of Bali".

To summarize : What we do here at jams is ecstatic-partner-dance-hands-touching-cuddle-party-foreplay-fusion with 10-25% of Contact Improvisation elements (often). It's not Contact Improvisation as it is known in the rest of the world. If you have been elsewhere, then you know this.

Conversations are had over lunches among CI dancers and teachers that we feel the same jadedness and frustration. Some of these dancers have left, back to USA, Europe & Russia.

This is why I teach, because I love Bali. But we can do better, so we don't lose people.

I'm passionate about the depth of what is possible in CI and I enjoy initiating dancers and watching them grow. We need knowledge and skill, as much as we need connection and a fun dance community.

I crave and choose depth.

If what I share is small and impacts only a few committed dancers, so be it.

I pray every class that the right people show up, that I feel centered to lead, that we have fun.

But first, it takes showing up.

Continued from last email (Pt 2/2) Here are some objections I often hear when it comes to signing up for workshops. Honestly, I've had the same ones too in my journey as a dancer. Reason 1 "I don't have enough training." My skill level in Contact skyrocketed in residencies, of 3 weeks to a month long, or 5 day festivals. I was a"beginner" by all means before then. Current is a week, with 5 day option. I tell dancers in my workshops, training is equally important as practicing. You learn...
